Betws Y Coed & Sarn Helen – Forest, Foothills and Roman Road

Suitable for: Intermediate
Ascent: 480m
Distance: 18km

‘Sarn Helen is not a mountain. Its not a forest. Its not a trail centre. Sarn Helen is a piece of ancient history. It’s a ruin you can ride.’ MBR Magazine, 2019.

This is a fantastic day out in varied, inspiring and demanding yet achievable terrain. It’s climbs and descents will offer challenge and smiles for miles! There are amazing views of the mighty Moel Siabod, the peak which overshadows this ride as well as of many of Snowdonia’s other giants. The route takes us up through the Gwydir forest and down into the beautiful Lledr valley which takes us to the pretty village of Dolwyddelan and a handy shop where we can top up our energy levels with snacks and a cold/hot drink. The return leg climbs back up and onto a fantastic old drover’s road which takes us back via a very rocky, challenging descent to Betws – Y – Coed and its many fantastic eateries, including ‘Hangin Pizzeria’ the best pizza, coffee and cannoli outside of Sicily!!
