Is This Weekend Right for Me?

This weekend is aimed at women who already have some off-road riding experience and want to develop their skills, confidence and enjoyment on mountain bike trails.

You’ll need to be comfortable riding a bike off-road, including blue-grade trails. We will be exploring  mountain doubletrack, ancient drover routes and natural mountain trails as well as some man-made singletrack.

You don’t need to be an expert rider or super-fit. Being willing to get off and walk sections you’re not comfortable riding is an important part of mountain biking, and we’ll provide coaching, encouragement and support to help you progress safely and confidently.

An E-MTB can also be a great option if you’re concerned about fitness, helping to level the playing field and allowing you to concentrate on developing your riding skills and enjoying the experience.

The Riding

This is much more than simply following a guide down a trail.

We’ll explore the ancient tracks, forests and iconic trails that weave through the Eryri landscape, while learning about the fascinating history, culture and natural environment of these mountains.

The emphasis throughout the weekend is on building confidence, improving your riding and having a brilliant time on your bike — all within a friendly and supportive group.

Bikes & Hire

A mountain bike with front suspension or full suspension is ideal for this weekend.

You are welcome to bring your own bike, but please get in touch beforehand so we can check that it is suitable for the terrain.

Bike hire can also be arranged:

  • Regular hardtail: £35 per day
  • E-MTB: £50 per day

Bike hire is not included in the weekend price.

How the Weekend Works

Each riding day starts with a 09:30–10:00 meet-up and finishes at approximately 15:30.

Evenings are free to relax, refuel, relive the day’s adventures and enjoy the company of the group.

The itinerary below is an example and may change depending on weather and trail conditions.

Friday Evening – Welcome & Preparation

7:00pm

We’ll meet for introductions, a bike fit if hire bikes have been booked and a kit check.

It’s a chance to meet the group, make sure everyone and their bikes are ready for the weekend, and ask any last-minute questions before we head out on Saturday.

Day 1 – Saturday

Distance: 20–27km
Ascent: approximately 600–800m

Starting in Betws-y-Coed, we’ll ride a mixture of forest trails, lakeside tracks and beautiful natural bridleways, including sections of the Gwydir Mawr trail.

There’ll be plenty of opportunities along the way to work on your riding skills, build confidence and enjoy the incredible scenery.

If conditions allow, we’ll finish with an optional river swim, followed by coffee or a well-earned beer.

Saturday Evening

After a full day on the bike, we’ll enjoy a recovery-focused yoga session with Sam from Bodhi Movement, designed to improve mobility and help your body recover.

We’ll then tuck into some homemade treats before heading out to enjoy dinner at one of the great local pubs.

Day 2 – Sunday

Distance: 18–23km
Ascent: approximately 500–700m

On Sunday we’ll head into the dramatic Carneddau mountains, with sweeping views towards the North Wales coast and Conwy Castle.

Expect ancient grassy tracks, Bronze Age stone circles and some fantastic natural riding before a memorable finish into Conwy Quay.

We’ll celebrate the weekend with a local beer, coffee and cake before saying our goodbyes.

I have a B.Ed degree in Outdoor Education, an M.Ed in Applied Linguistics, and hold British Cycling Level 2 and Level 3 MTB Leadership qualifications, as well as the British Cycling Level 2 MTB Coaching qualification.

Mountain biking is now my focus and passion. I’ve developed my skills through extensive riding in the UK and Alps, as well as trips to Canada, the USA and Morocco.

My background in ski racing, rock climbing and mountaineering gives me a broad depth of experience that I can bring to RideHigh MTB clients.

I’ve raced Downhill and Enduro in the UK and Europe, but my heart is really in the high mountains. I’m happiest planning and accompanying clients and friends on awesome two-wheeled adventures in the big hills.

Is this for me and other FAQs

L
What if I am isolating or ill and can’t attend the weekend?

We strongly recommend you take out holiday insurance as we cannot refund due to illness / injury. We will however fill your place if we have a waiting list and, in that case, we will refund your booking cost. Please see T&Cs on the RideHigh MTB website.

L
What if the weather forecast is bad and I don’t want to ride in bad weather? Can I cancel?

Of course, you can cancel but we will not issue a refund. Please note that the weekend will go ahead despite any poor weather. There are many different ride options and locations which are more sheltered than others. We also recommend that participants bring warm and wet weather riding kit as this is Scotland after all!

L
What is the riding like? Will my riding be up to it?

Weather permitting, the riding on these weekends will be mainly natural trails along with some technical riding on rocky terrain.

If you are happy riding a variety of red and black, trail centre trails and have ridden some off-piste then these weekend are suitable for you. Please note that the Introduction to Lake District Trails weekend is suitable for riders comfortable on blue/red trails.

There is also a fair amount of climbing involved as you'd expect in any mountainous region. Around 600-1000m of climbing (more for the E-Bike tours) and on the Helvellyn day though! We will be on-hand to offer coaching tips to help you build confidence with this style of riding.

We are used to introducing customers to challenging terrain, but you must be aware of your limits and not feel any pressure to ride any feature you are unsure of.

**Please get in touch to chat about this if you are at all concerned**

L
How fit do I need to be?
We will be out on the bikes for a full day on Saturday and Sunday and a half day on Monday. So, you should be used to spending at least 4-6 hours in the saddle. * See itinerary for more detail* The fitter you are, the more enjoyable the weekend will be BUT please try not to worry, everyone climbs at their own pace and in my experience, on a weekend MTB course, riders are very happy to chat, take pictures and encourage each other on both climbs and descents.
L
What riding kit/equipment do I need to bring?

A well-fitting helmet is a must. No helmet, no ride! A half shell/ full-face with detachable chin bar / lightweight, enduro style full-face is suitable. You are likely to overheat if you ride in a heavy, DH full-face helmet.

  • Gloves
  • Goggles / Glasses
  • Kneepads (elbow pads optional)
  • Body armour which you are comfortable pedalling in
  • Backpack / bumbag
  • Water bottle/camelback
  • Trail snacks/gels/bars/ trail mix
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Riding clothes for both warm and cold weather
  • Any component spares specific to your bike i.e. mech hanger, brake pads
  • Inner tube + any usual trailside fix kit

L
What if I realise, I’ve bitten off more than I can chew?

Don’t panic… Anyone can have a bad day! Your guides are also qualified coaches and can offer top tips to help you. However, no-one should ever feel pressured to ride a feature they don't like the look of. Simply hopping off and walking bike down is often the best strategy.
